John Skelton 

1923 - 1999

1923 Born Glasgow.

1930-34 Choirboy at Norwich Cathedral.

1935 Moved to Coventry for his father’s work.

1939-40 Attended Coventry School of Art.

1940 Apprenticed to his uncle Eric Gill for three months until Gill died. Moved to Burgess Hill to work with Joseph Cribb, Gill’s assistant.

1942-47 Army, training and war service in the Far East.

1947-50 Worked at Bridgemans Monumental Masons, Lewes, Sussex.

1948 Married Myrtle Martin.

1949 Son Jonathan is born.

1950 Left Bridgemans and sets up his own workshop in Burgess Hill.

Here he carries out commissions for churches, schools and private clients.

1951 Daughter Helen Mary is born.

1952 Takes on Jack Trowbridge as his first apprentice.

1958 Moves to Streat, near Ditchling Sussex and converts a coach house into his workshop. Takes on second apprentice, Paul Wehrle.

1963 First of many exhibitions, this one at Chichester Museum.

1964 Invited to Yugoslavia to represent Great Britain at the International Sculpture Symposium.

1968 Daughter Rebecca Alys is born.

1972-82 Set up and taught sculpture and lettercutting courses courses at West Dean College, West Sussex.

1973 Takes on third apprentice, his daughter Helen Mary.

1975 Winner of the Royal Society of British Sculptor’s silver medal.

1976 Jack, Paul and Helen Mary start their own businesses.

1983 Takes on fourth apprentice, Reuben Walters.

1985 Presided as the Master of the Art Workers’Guild, London.

1989 Appointed MBE in New Year Honours List.

1989-90 artist in residence at Bishop at a college Chichester West Sussex.

1990-95 Established ‘Atelia Strata’ at Blabers Mead, Streat teaching two 5 day courses per year in sculpture and letter cutting.

1999 Died at Blabers Mead,Streat.
