SKELTON
WORKSHOPS
John Skelton MBE
1923 to 1999

John Skelton was a sculptor, lettercutter and artist working in stone, wood, metal and some newer materials such as perspex and fibreglass during the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

He ran a vibrant and busy workshop in a converted coach house 3 miles outside Ditchling in a village called Streat, beneath the South Downs. For a period of 3 years during the 70s, 3 apprentices worked hard completing prestigious commissions and lettering jobs of all kinds. At other times throughout his career John welcomed students into the workshop and enthusiastically conveyed his skills in direct carving and lettercutting.

Alongside managing the workshop, John painted many watercolours and created numerous sculptures. Most of these works were sold at exhibitions, either at his house or from galleries throughout this country and abroad. He also produced some fascinating illustrated diaries.
His works were chosen on 28 occasions to be exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer exhibitions between 1952 and 1993.
His development of letterforms and letter carving techniques is acknowledged by fellow craftsman to this day.
