2020 Courses

Course tuition is by Helen Mary Skelton (lettercutting),

Paulien Gluckman (sculpture), Jo Sweeting (sculpture and lettercutting)

and Alyosha Moeran (sculpture & lettercutting)

 

Courses are held in the studio of the late John Skelton FRSA, MBE, sculptor and letter cutter, beneath the South Downs in beautiful rural Sussex near the south coast of England.

The sculpture course includes the techniques of direct carving in stone, considerations of form, nature of materials and use and care of tools. Individual tuition takes place throughout the course. The lettercutting course is based upon the simple application of Roman letterforms. The processes from design through to finishing techniques are included.

Materials For Sculpture:

Please bring any drawings, maquettes, idea or sketches, sketch book and pencils (hard and soft). Hat, goggles and cotton gloves are useful too. Please wear stout shoes.

Materials For Lettercutting:

Sketch books, pencils (hard and soft), ruler and rubber. Also bring your ideas! Please wear stout shoes.

Stone

Stone is sold by the kilo and ranges in price from £3-5.50 per kilo. Softer stone such as Bath and Serpentine are used for sculpture and suitable limestones or slate for lettercutting.

Basic tools are provided but please bring your own if you have them.

Lunch

There are several pubs within a three mile radius all serving meals or bring a packed lunch.

Accommodation is available in nearby guest houses.
