Workshops in stone sculpture and lettercutting

No Experience necessary

Course tuition is given by Paulien Gluckman (sculpture) and Jo Sweeting (sculpture and lettercutting).
Courses are held in the studio of the late John Skelton FRSA, MBE, sculptor and letter cutter, beneath the South Downs in beautiful rural Sussex near the south coast of England.
The sculpture course includes the techniques of direct carving in stone, considerations of form, nature of materials and use and care of tools.
Individual tuition takes place throughout the course.
The lettercutting course is based upon the simple application of Roman letterforms.
The processes from design through to finishsing techniques are inlcuded.

Relief Carving in Stone – Plant Forms
Saturdays PM
October 2 onwards
A Saturday afternoon course run by Jo Sweeting starting on October 2.
The course offers students an introduction to low/medium relief carving in limestone.Help will be given on all aspects of design, drawing onto stone and carving direct onto panels.
Techniques will be demonstrated by the tutor and individual support given, making the course  suitable for beginners and more advanced students to extend their ideas and skills. Plants and tools provided.
Stone at extra cost.Please bring along drawing materials and a sketchbook if you have them.


Course fees include all tuition and morning and afternoon drinks (with light refreshments).
There is a maximum of 12 places.


Materials For Sculpture:

Please bring any drawings, maquettes, idea or sketches, sketch book and pencils (hard and soft). Hat, goggles and cotton gloves are useful too. Please wear stout shoes.

Materials For Lettercutting:

Sketch books, pencils (hard and soft), ruler and rubber. Also bring your ideas!. Please wear stout shoes.

Stone
Stone is sold by the kilo and ranges in price from £3-5.50 per kilo. Softer stone such as Bath and Serpentine are used for sculpture and suitable limestones or slate for lettercutting.
Basic tools are provided but please bring your own if you have them.
Lunch
There are several pubs within a three mile radius all serving meals or bring a packed lunch.
