Workshops in the UK in stone sculpture and lettercutting for day students.

Courses are held in the studio of the late John Skelton FRSA, MBE, sculptor and letter cutter, beneath the South Downs in beautiful rural Sussex near the south coast of England.

Stone Sculpture and Lettercutting 2008/09 course dates

Thursday evenings

7-9pm

10 weeks starting 25 September, 2008 – £140, payable half termly.

Maximum of eight students taken for sculpture and four for lettercutting. Course fees include all tuition fees and light refreshments. Beginners welcome! A non returnable deposit of £25 is required when booking.


Sculpture course

Includes techniques of direct carving in stone and drawing, consideration of form, nature of materials, use and care of tools.

The course is led by Paulien Gluckman

Soft stones, such as Bath and soapstone, are used.

What to bring (all optional but helpful):
Basic tools are provided, but please bring your own if you have them and if convenient.
Bring your drawings, maquettes, ideas or sketches, sketch book, hard and soft pencils.
Hat, goggles, dust mask, cotton gloves.

Lettercutting course

The course is based upon the simple application of Roman letter forms from design through to a completed inscription with cutting and finishing techniques included.

The course is led by Helen Mary Skelton

Stones, such as limestone and slate, are used.

What to bring: Sketch book, ideas, hard and soft pencils and ruler.

Stone

Stone is sold by the kilo and ranges in price from £3-5 per kilo. Average piece for letter cutting £20 upwards and for sculpture £40 upwards.
